What to do when you feel like you’ve lost faith in the universe 🌱

Here we are back on the original format of the newsletter. Even though I can appreciate the creative oasis that is substack, for me design has always been a corner stone of the Modern Mind brand. The lack of that in substack felt inauthentic and so here we are back to my preferred visual expression for you all.

I was sitting with a friend last week, enjoying a cup of steaming hot ginger tea and some apple cider donuts while we talked about how we both had recently lost a little bit of faith in the universe.

Something I've come to learn through my years of writing is that if something is coming up for me personally, it's likely coming up for this community too. And so today, I wanted to write to you about what to do when you have stopped trusting your life.

Maybe it was disappointing news around something you were hoping for, a relationship ending, not feeling the way you thought you would after reaching the goal and maybe, theres no attributable source at all. Just a feeling that it's become harder to simply let go and trust fall into your life. To know that things will inevitably work out for you.

First off - what a wonderful skill it is to have hesitation. In fact, if your ancestors hadn't developed this skill to be apprehensive at times, your lineage may have just stopped a little earlier than when it reached you.

When we hear 'let go and trust', it's natural to have some inner resistance rise. I think many of us can see that if we totally take our hands off the wheel, we may run our metaphorical car off the road. It's part of the reason why I don't go walking around our house saying 'let go and trust' to the dishes that need to be done, the work that is left or the meal that needs preparing.

Trust is a two way street.

Just as much as you may be wanting to trust your life, but it feels far away, you may be being called to trust YOURSELF and your own capacity to act.

Perhaps it's not that you've lost faith in the universe, but you've lost faith in yourself - even if just temporarily.

Welcome to being a human.

The ebbs and flows in the relationship we have with ourselves is mirrored in the relationship that we have with our lives.

If you resonate with these words, know that you are not alone. This chapter is not your destiny and in this moment, you can set a new reality in motion.

How? By starting with reconnecting and learning to trust yourself again. Little by little, day by day.. the more you create safety within yourself, the more you will start to see that reflected in a trust in your life. Because truthfully how could we trust life to take good care of us, if we aren't?

Here are a few practical tools to help reconnect with your own energy and self trust:

  1. Morning Pages (two pages of free flow journalling in the morning) - a practice I keep coming back to time and time again for a reason. Think of this as catching up with yourself for a coffee. These check points let your inner self know she/he is heard and there is space for them.

  2. Pausing from social media consumption. If only for a day. How could you know how you really feel about something, if you are constantly inundated with everyone else's opinions?

  3. Decision making. Even on the small stuff - especially on the small stuff. Are you checking in with others before you have permission to make a choice for yourself? What would it feel like to focus on learning from a choice rather than needing to get it 'right'?

  4. Doing something that is non-productive (+ ideally fun).Sounds silly to write this one, but its become so much more common in our lives to make every single moment during the day productive. What if you scheduled even ten minutes to listen to your favorite song, to sit outside for a moment, to have a glass of water with no multitasking. Maybe you could even schedule a class you are interested in, or book a concert or experience you've been really excited about. Let this be your permission slip to do something FUN and non-productive for yourself.

Self trust = trust in the universe. Not because we have to do it all ourselves, but because when we do trust ourselves, it becomes more natural to release control. To know that no matter what, things are going to be just fine, perhaps better than we could have ever planned ourselves.
